  • Miners and tunnels and dams, oh my!

I was very grateful to be invited to travel with a group of retired miners and construction workers as they celebrated 75 Years of their organization.  I took photos of the various events they attended and visited a number of the projects they worked on through out the Kootenay region.  We shall also be travelling north and to the Island before this road trip is complete.

These individuals who built this province are a breed of their own.  Very distinct in their outlooks on life, steadfast and loyal to fellow workers and a little on the ‘crazy side’.  While hearing many stories as these retired men met again and relived the old days I was given a glimpse into their world.  They blasted the rock to give us roads.  They tunnelled deep underground to give us hydro electric power and they went out into the bush to tame the wilderness that inevitably arrives on the heels of modernization.

The community these men (mainly men, although I will be meeting one of the first female members of this tight crew in Prince George next week) developed was extraordinary and I am not sure can be repeated today.    The comraderie was strong in those environments where a ill-placed cap could send rock hurtling back through the sky and snuff out a life so quickly.

Not many of this group left.

I look forward to further adventures as we travel North.
