  • The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

This past weekend my family participated in The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.  I wasn’t sure what to expect as this was our first adventure, but Miller Park in Coquitlam proved to be anything but a simple morning of picking up garbage.

My husband found a tire almost immediately, and then we quickly moved onto the creek bed which was littered with bits of plastic in almost every size, shape and colour you can imagine .  The kids with their eagle eyes enjoyed pointing out scraps of unnatural colour in the woods and our little family did well clambering down embankments and cleaning up the creek.

Some of the other volunteers that day found lawn mowers, old stoves, chairs, concrete, fire extinguisers and much much more.

It was hard work and a little overwhelming once we returned with bag after bag of discarded garbage and we were only one small group in one small park.  I believe this will be a yearly family event as the kids were really proud of themselves even though it was not the most enjoyable family outing.
